Ausländer in Fredericksburg...

The road goes on, and so do the phone-calls, Susanne Weihl calls me right afterwards to make it into the 3 o'clock news, and I guess she does. With her I talk through Silver Valley, Coleman, maybe I get my spare-parts here for my stove??? But no, I drive and talk right on. Then I'm driving through this "real" western town, missing a few horses in front of the saloon. The town is Santa Anna, still on Route 84, but after finishing the conversation with Susanne, we talk half german half english, depending on which word comes easier out of my mouth, I realize that I did not pay enough attention to the map and I missed the turn-off to 283 I made a U-turn and head back to Santa Anna, luckily it was only 3 miles and then I turned south onto Hwy-283 towards Brady.

Driving twice through Santa Anna while talking on the phone, passing gas and watching flowers...

Passing a town called File, that reminded me that I have to send in the check to pay my taxes, then I saw the turnoff for Lohn, german for salary, payday that you have to pay taxes for... I tell you these guys know more that we think. At 4:30 I roll into Brady, this town's claim is "the heart of Texas", even though most people don't think of Texas having one, but it does. Interestingly enough, before driving through File, I crossed the Colorado River, yes you go figure, Texas does have to have it's very own Colorado River, but I tell you it does not have a chance compared to the "real" Colorado River.
A half hour later I drive through Mason and forty-five minutes later I park my car in Judy's driveway in Fredericksburg.
453 Miles to get me smack-dead in the middle of Texas. A long drive and only maybe the last hour that the landscape got interesting again. Fredericksburg is in the Hill-country and hills always make a difference, it will be the last hills I see once I leave this place in a few days. Now it's time to rest, eat and drink!!!
Judy Fleming is waiting out front for me, I stayed at here house a year ago when I did the trip to Lafayette. She is a good friend of Sharon Moreno, and Sharon I know form the Great Mother Conference, and it is her that I visit here but she has no room in her house and so Judy offers her place again. Even better is that she has build on to the garage and so I have my own little house while here in Fredericksburg.
While I'm moving-in, shower and chat with Judy, Sharon is making Pizza at here house and so Judy and I drive over for dinner to Sharon's house. What a reunion, Max her husband is there too and their kids appear now and then to say hi and what not. The pizzas are awesome, the beers, Sierra Nevada's from good old California, go down smooth and then we all head over to a real Honky-tonk place not far outside of Fredericksburg. Luckenbach is basically a dance-hall and all the things one needs for a festive get-together in the country, outhouses, a bar-building and a structure for a gift-shop.

Dinner at the Moreno's...

A real Honkey-Tonk place in Luckenbach...

What a place what a time, but then it was time to go home and get some rest... I'm dead exhausted and ready for a good nights rest. Well the rest started pretty good until at who knows 6 o'clock the birds started screeching, yes screeching and not whistling or whatever decent birds do in the morning, it was hell and no pillow over the head helped. Still I managed to stay in bed until 10 in the morning, a shower and onto the bike to see Sharon. Today is Easter and will have to see what's open in town.
We walk for a few hours and end up for a snack to eat at the famous german restaurant "Der Ausländer" this is german for the foreigner... I order a sausage, sauerkraut plate with the dark-rye bread and a few slices of cheese. Sharon orders a greek salad and has a pile of salami on it, that she passes over to my plate, tz tz tz, greek salad with salami, not for a vegetarian. We just finished by 3 o'clock and where ready to move on... but not before...

And what about Me???

My photo
Berkeley, California, United States
My life as a vagabond in the last few years got me to some amazing places, met great people and have lots of stories to share. I love exploring, travel, biking, dancing to Zydeco music, hanging out with friends, biking and many other things to keep me in trouble... best is when I can combine a few of these things together!!! Then there is the photography, writing and might as well do some cooking too, after all eating is another of my favorite thing!!!
