Todays plan is to go visit North Adams, a 45 minute drive from here and then have a look at the Museum of Contemporary Art, MASS MoCA. Now North Adams is not the center of attention and the town is struggling to get on any maps. I guess the summertime has more traffic and tourist flowing through downtown. Albany, NY and a few other culture rich places are within 1 to 2 hour drive, New York City is about 3 hours. The Hoosic river flows right through town and established a few mills along it, with that people moved to the area and the town grew bigger in the 18 hundreds. Spreg Electric build this huge compound for its manufacturing of electric components. After the company closed that location and probably a long time of idling MASS MoCA bought it and started it's museum, a great setting of endless brick-buildings, courtyards and covered walkways. My favorite exhibits were by this photographer, J. Henry Fair, who takes aerial shots of toxic waste. He had six big prints on display, 4 of them were from Louisiana, kind of sad to see that. Then there was a show on chinese modern growth, shocking photos of housing and industrial devastation of the country. Next is one with a series of photos from a national project of land use interpretation, it showed the worst sites of Massachusetts. Another cool exhibit was the personal bio-doms, small greenhouses that were suspended from the ceiling and had a round hole on the bottom so you could stick your head through it and enter a different world. Like a forest, moist and warm air filled with smells of ferns and moss, tres cool!!!
